Mumps

  • Clinical – [1/3 asymptomatic] [malaise, myalgia, anorexia over 2-3/52] > [parotid enlagrgement (70%)]
  • Dangerous in 1st trimester – teratogenic
  • Parotid gland – [initially achy] [displace ear lobe up] [overlying mandible & SCM] [submandibular & sublingual gland inflammation] [one or both parotids over 1-3/7] > [swelling improves in 7-10/7]
  • Infective period – [2/7 beginning rash] > [9/7 after rash symptoms] or [5/7 after gland swelling]

Rubella

  • Prodromal – [fever] [malaise] [coryza] [eye gritty] [cough]
  • Rash (usually the first sign) – [pink, macular, mildly puritic] [Behind ears & face] > [Trunk & limb over 2-4/7 to fade]
  • Cervical lymphadenopathy – [preceeds by week] [lasts for several weeks]
  • Arthralgia & arthritis – [adolecents & adults] [lasts for 4 weeks] [fingers/wrists/knees – symmetrical]
  • Dangerous in 1st trimester – congenital rubella syndrome [cataracts, deafness, brain abnormalities]
  • Infective period – [7/7 beginning rash] > [4/7 after rash first appears]
