Rash and skin infections

Cold sores (herpes simplex) None
Rubella Four days from onset of rash
Hand, foot and mouth None
Impetigo Until lesions are crusted and healed or 48 hours after commencing antibiotic
Measels Four days from onset of rash
Molluscum contagiosum None
Ringwork None
Roseola None
Scabies Child can return after first treatment
Scarlet fever Child can return 24 hours after commencing antibiotic
Slapped cheek (fifth disease or parvovirus B19) Non once rash has developed
Shingles Exclude only if rash is weeping and cannot be covered
Warts and verrucae None

Diarrhoea and vomiting

Condition Exclusion advice
Diarrhoea and/or vomiting 48 hours from last episode of diarrhoea or vomiting
E. Coli O157 VTEC

Typhoid (and paratyphoid/enteric fever)

Shigella (dysentery)

48 hours from last episode of diarrhoea

Further exclusion may be required for some children until they are no longer excreting (need microbiological evidence)

Need to report to Public health for guidance

Cryptosporidiosis 48 hours after last episode of diarrhoea.  Exclude from swimming for 2 weeks.

Respiratory infections

Whooping cough (pertussis) 48 hours from commencing antibiotic or 21 days from onset of illness if no antibiotic

Hepatitis A Exclude until 7 days after onset of jaundice (or 7 days after symptom onset if no jaundice)

Meningococcal meningitis/septicaemia Until recovered
Meningitis due to other bacteria Until recovered
Viral meningitis None
Mumps Exclude for 5 days after onset of swelling
Threadworms None
Tonsillitis None
